Nintendo Wii Fit uses a one-of-a-kind peripheral called the Wii Balance board to deliver various fitness activities. In fact, in total there are around a whopping 40 activities to allow you to combine the benefits of an exercise regime with the fun of everyone’s beloved Nintendo Wii console, including:

• Yoga-based exercises
• Push ups
• Step aerobics

In addition, there are also game-based activities, such as:

• Boxing
• Ski jumping
• Heading footballs

Wii Fit price - how much will it be?

The RRP for Wii Fit is £69.99. So far, a number of retailers have had offerings for slightly less than that Wii Fit price. These have mainly been with the use of discount codes in conjunction with Wii Fit preorders. Wii Fit sounds like fun! But will there be any way to measure improvements in my fitness level after using Wii Fit?

Of course, Wii Fit sounds like great fun, but as with any exercise-based activity there is the chance to reap enormous benefits in terms of individual general health. With the Wii Balance Board – explained in more depth below – the gamer’s Body Mass Index, or BMI (essentially, a measure how much an individual’s weight is more or less than what is considered healthy for a person of their height) can easily be measured and tracked. A more fun perspective is provided by the title’s “Wii Fitness Age” – just as in Wii Sports, which also provides a fitness age, or in the Brain Age titles which provide a “Brain Age”, this is a fun way to judge your progress and, hence, your improving fitness levels.

Just how fit could I get with Wii Fit?

As of yet, there have been no studies featuring Wii Fit. However, Liverpool John Moore have conducted a study into the beneficial effects of playing the one game every Wii owner will have encountered - Wii Sports. Based on 12.2 hours spent playing a week, it was found that 1830 calories can be burnt a week by children using the Wii console. When you consider women's recommended daily calorific intake is 2000 calories, if female that's almost a whole day's calories you could burn per week which and it is estimated this could lead to a yearly weight loss of 27lb! The aim of Wii Fit is to expand on the concept of Wii Sports and, with this in mind, it could be anticipated that the beneficial effects will be even more dramatic.

What is the Wii Balance Board?

The Wii balance board - or, as some people call it, the Wii Fit mat, is a key part of the Wii Fit experience. A wireless device, it contains multiple pressure sensors and is said to be probably more accurate in measuring weight than a typical set of bathroom scales! Although initially the Wii balance board will be for use with Wii Fit, its use will likely be incorporated in additional games in the future. For example, snowboarding is frequently cited as being well-suited to the device.

How popular will Wii Fit be? Do you think there will be stock issues?

Although yet to be launched in Europe, Wii Fit has notched up staggering sales in Japan since launch, selling around 1 million units. With this in mind, it looks as if there could well be problems with the availability of Wii Fit.
